Parasites and Pathogens

Parasitic organisms are one of the most understudied groups when compared to their diversity and ecological impact. With a foundation in the lab's history with aquatic insect work, we are researching fish/parasite systems in Grand Canyon. Many of these parasites are likely transmitted through aquatic invertebrates to their fish hosts. Due to the threatened humpback chub populations in the canyon, understanding the health impacts of parasites is important. We can learn more about potential parasite introductions and if they pose a risk to fish. In addition, there is little work that surveys the overall biodiversity of parasites, including protists, in the system. Because of rapid environmental changes to the Colorado River, establishing a reference state for future conservation is crucial.
